2010 FIFA World Cup showing at Cinestar Cinemas
The month-long FIFA 2010 World Cup, which kicks off on June 11, promises to be an enthralling spectacle – not least because it will be the first tournament where games will be shown extensively in UAE cinemas.
CineStar will screen all 64 World Cup Matches live utilising their advanced digital 2K projection on wide screens, and 3D games may also be broadcast, enabling viewers the opportunity to experience a world first – a 3D World Cup final.
The World Cup viewing experience adds a fresh viewing perspective, one that’s not limited to the home, bar or café. Fans can sit in air-conditioned theatres, enjoying a wide range of food and beverage while watching the matches on 20-metre screens.
Cameron Mitchell, General Manager CineStar Cinemas Middle East, said sports will be the first alternative content screened, followed closely by concerts and children’s entertainment. “Digital technology has changed and enhanced the way movies are seen, and now it is changing what content we have access to in the cinema,” he said.
Michelle Walsh, Marketing Manager for CineStar Cinemas, added: “Alternative content is the ‘hot potato’ for cinemas at the moment – it’s definitely the future.” She said Cinestar has started receiving requests from corporate groups for World Cup games, particularly from the banking sector, and is willing to arrange food & beverage as part of the overall package. Single tickets for matches cost Dhs35.
Cinestar currently has eight 3D screens in the UAE – Mall of the Emirates (two), Mirdif City Centre (two), Marina Mall Abu Dhabi (two), and one each in Deira City Centre and Ajman – and the figure is projected to rise.
